Bill and Betsy Sten, a suburban, professional couple, turned to a surrogate mother after they learned a pregnancy could cost Betsy her life. MaryBeth Whitehead, a married mother with two children, was an eager surrogate candidate. A New York infertility clinic brought the two sides together and in a shor time an agreement was struck whereby MaryBeth would turn the child over to the Sterns at birth. A fee was negotiated and a contract signed.
Within a year, a baby girl was born. But as quickly as the partnership between the Sterns and MaryBeth was sealed, it became unglued. The fight for custody of "Baby M" became one of the most controversial stories of the 1980's. |
